Cardiovascular Health in Women

11 October 2022

I moved a motion in the Assembly calling on the ACT Government to pursue opportunities to better understand the impact of CVD on women, and to improve awareness of symptoms of CVD experienced by women.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and illness amongst Australian women. Whilst both women and men experience a similar prevalence of CVD in Australia, outcomes for women are significantly worse. Part of the issue is that women experience different symptoms to the ones we traditionally think about when it comes to CVD. Symptoms that are synonymous with CVD do not always occur for women, the disease manifests in different ways.

It is a medical issue that is incredibly important to apply a gendered lens to in order to better understand and rectify the disparity in outcomes between men and women.
