Perceptions of community safety are real, and important. The data and evidence that is collected on crime and police response is also real and important.
And as closely aligned as those two elements can be, is where my advocacy sits.
Below is a spreadsheet, tracking monthly crime statistics for Woden Valley, Weston Creek and the Molonglo Valley since January 2019.
You can find the full dataset for all ACT regions at: Crime Statistics | ACT Policing Online News
You can also access the Productivity Commission's website on police services, comparing different jurisdictions at: 6 Police services - Report on Government Services Productivity Commission (pc.gov.au)
The ACT has marginally less police than NSW, however, we are a very different jurisdiction. The Productivity Commission data shows that if you are involved in a critical incident, you will get police to you in the ACT two minutes faster than anywhere else in the country.
My priority is that the community feels safe and that police are resourced to be able to adequately respond. I am committed to continuing to work with the community on this matter.
The ACT Government has recently funded the new Police Services Model that I often talk about and commend. It has been operational since early 2021.
I continue to encourage anyone to contact me with any concerns; and I will continue to keep you updated on progress and action; as well as the data and evidence on community safety in Murrumbidgee.
You can email me anytime at: [email protected]; or phone my office on: 6205 1448
And - as always - if you see anything concerning, call
- ACT Policing on 131 444 or
- Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
