Betting Operations Tax Increase
03 August 2022
The ACT Government's increase to the Betting Operations Tax was an incredibly important move that has been needed for some time.
A motion was moved in the Assembly by Mr Mark Parton MLA, calling on the ACT Government to return revenue raised through the Betting Operations Tax back to the ACT's horse racing industry. Mr Chris Steel MLA, as Special Minister of State, moved amendments to ensure the ACT Government's Memorandum of Understanding with racing clubs contains provision for a safe, humane and sustainable racing industry in the ACT, and to continue to work with racing clubs to facilitate a diversified and sustainable revenue stream.
I spoke in response to the motion and Mr Steel's amendments, voicing my concern that we need to do much more to minimise harm from the gambling industry, including racing and sports bets.
