Duffy Shops Upgrades

03 May 2021

The ACT Government has committed $2.5 million to upgrade the amenity and facilities at the Duffy Shops surrounds. These upgrades are intended to encourage Canberrans to shop locally, support local businesses and enhance stronger community connections by bringing people together at their local centre.

Local shopping centres are often the heart and hub of the local community. As such, these areas must provide a welcoming, safe, attractive and convenient space for all users. As your local member for Murrumbidgee, I would love to hear your thoughts on what is important to you. I want to ensure the future of the area reflects what the community wants.

During April and May I sought your comments and feedback via mobile offices, email, phone calls and Facebook.

Comments you provided will help to determine the detailed design recommendations, which will inform how the physical infrastructure funding will be spent, and the priorities for works.

On 24 May 2021 I met with Mr Chris Steel MLA, Minister for Transport and City Services and with the project lead and executive staff from Transport Canberra and City Services, to pass on your feedback. I took this opportunity to discuss your comments in detail, ensuring that your feedback is incorporated in site outcomes.

Attached is the document I provided, outlining a summary analysis of what you told me; together with selected comments to highlight key points raised.

It is anticipated that final designs will be completed in the second half of 2021, ahead of construction commencing later in the year.

I look forward to continuing to provide project updates as more details become available, and will be watching closely to ensure that the design and construction matches what the community has said that you want.

Please note: the existing shop building and businesses do not form part of the scope of works for the Duffy Shops upgrades. The building is privately owned. The scope of the upgrades is the surrounding amenities of the shops
