On Thursday 8th June, I passed a motion calling on the ACT Government to look at a public safety plan alongside it's Night-Time Economy strategy, and also look at the purple flag accreditation!
Canberra’s Night-Time Economy strategy is aiming to transform our city into a leading worldwide nightlife destination, which is very exciting.
I believe that Canberra has immense potential to become a national hotspot for our night-time economy – from fulfilling the desires of foodies to providing an exciting dance floor, captivating theatre experiences, and live entertainment!
As we work on shaping our night-time strategy, it is crucial to ensure that public safety remains at the forefront of our consultations and considerations. After all, a good night out is synonymous with everyone returning home safely.
Canberra's dynamic nightlife provides ample opportunities for both work and socializing. However, the success of our night-time economy is intrinsically linked to public safety.
I presented the motion urging the ACT Government to explore the potential for Purple Flag accreditations in Canberra's premier nightlife precincts of Civic and Braddon, alongside other areas, as part of our ongoing consultation and work to elevate the ACT's nightlife.
The Purple Flag initiative accredits nightlife precincts that meet a set of best-practice standards encompassing safety measures, accessibility to public transport, adequate street lighting, and a vibrant food and beverage scene.
With over 90 locations worldwide, including renowned cities like Sydney, Stockholm, and Dublin, having received the Purple Flag accreditation, they have reported numerous benefits. These include heightened visibility, improved public perception, decreased crime rates, reduced anti-social behaviour, and long-term economic prosperity through the promotion of a diverse range of activities.
At present, the ACT Government is actively engaging with the community and industry stakeholders to establish a safe, vibrant, and thriving nightlife in Canberra.
This endeavour aligns with the recommendations outlined in the Better Regulation Report of 2022.
I hope this motion is just the start of greater representation of our night-time economy, as well as support for that everyone is able to enjoy a safe night out.
